Protect your eyes: Try A.Eyes

I’m involved in a pretty big project at work that requires building a brand new product. Projects of this magnitude tend to rattle my mind technically and can sometimes cause a groove in my thinking.. so to offset this, I’ve learned to take time out and work on a project completely unrelated to keep my thinking fresh.. to get out of my element and look at technical issues differently.

While the project at work requires the traditional Java programming language, I decided to learn a new programming language called Python. Its one thing to learn a new language by reading a book compared to actually creating a project with it.. it’s like my old CS professor said, “no pilot learned how to fly reading navigation books.” So here is my attempt at my first real project with Python. The project is actually a traditional LAMP project (L – linux, A – apache, M – mysql, P – python/php). I’ve spent a total of maybe 8 hours on the project so it looks and feels like an 8-hour job, but as I find more time to spend on it we’ll see. Also if you know Python or PHP please feel free to join me in this effort.

Anyway, the project is called AEyes, which stands for Accountability Eyes. Its basically a way to keep you accountable with what you view on the Internet and how much time you spend surfing the Net. Too many men I know struggle with the pervasiveness of Internet pornography that this project is an attempt at helping those men.

AEyes is basically a “program” in that you must join as a member of the program. AEyes does not block you or filter you from viewing any sites in particular.. rather it aims at your heart by allowing you to view what you desire, but will keep you accountable by allowing your accountability-partner to view all of your visited websites and see how much time you spent on those websites.

Some may ask, why the accountability-partner approach? My answer to them would be simply this:

IT IS MUCH HARDER TO LIE TO YOUR ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER THAN LIE TO YOURSELF

Quite simply, a person desperate enough can circumvent their installed filters and blocks and see the porn they wan to see.. However with an accountability system, that person will be held into account with all that they’ve viewed.
