Flyakite OSX Review by Dan Arcilla
I installed FlyaKite last night on my home machine. It’s very
cool. The most comprehensive skin I’ve ever seen for XP. Almost everything
is styled OSX. At least one application (e.g. Yahoo Messenger) was not
skinned, but everything else like toolbars, buttons, etc, and every
standard Windows icon was changed to the Mac version. They even created
some new icons for XP that were OSX-styled. Even standard buttons in the
IE browser changed! That was impressive.
Other observations
* No anti-aliasing of fonts. Anti-aliasing gives fonts the smooth
appearance on the Mac, but FlyaKite keeps them aliased. However, this is
actually pretty cool, because many people prefer aliased for very small
fonts.
* My machine noticably slowed down. But understandable, since I drive
an Athlon 1.6 with 1GB RAM, which isn’t a powerhouse these days.
* The OSX dock works! Even the minimize transitions when you shrink
windows to the dock! I was surprised to see that! They worked slowly on my
machine, but oh well.
I’m still toying with it. I probably won’t keep it for long, because of
the speed issue. I felt kinda stupid, too, because I’m like: “I’m a PC
user running a Mac emulator. LOL. Why don’t I make the switch?” Because
I’m a cheapskate, that’s why.
