The Lord’s Supper – telling our kids what it means
Today is the first Sunday of the month and in tradition of many bible churches, we had communion today. Tonight our pastor gave us of a very simple explanation he gave to his kids about when why they are not to rush in taking the Lord’s Supper. He spoke on the subject of Jesus Christ as a sanctuary, a safe and secure place that we can run to when we face sin, temptation, and trial. As he closed he reminded the kids that only when they see themselves a sinner in need of Christ as their sanctuary and born fruit reflective of that commitment and service to Christ can they take the bread and wine.
It was a mere sentence or two, but I thought it was very simple and natural transition from the message to the Lord’s Supper. Jesus Christ becomes our sanctuary at salvation who we can in a very real sense hide in. Jesus Christ can only be seen as a sanctuary when we see ourselves as sinners in need of a safe place to hide from the conviction of our sin and offense to God. Very simple that even this child understood it!
