Redeeming your daily commute time
If you find that you’re wasting time during your commute to and from work, I would encourage you to pop in some edifying messages to help redeem the time. I remember Alexander Strauch exhorting us once to constantly listen to tapes (before iPods became ubiquitous) of biblical messages and to cause our minds to look heavenward. Abraham from DG quotes Mark Shead from Productivity501 who encourages us to listen to audio messages as well, saying:
For the past 5 to 7 years, I’ve spent about 2 hours per week listening
to spoken audio. (This almost seems trivial compared to how much time
the average American spends watching television.) That means over the
past 5 years I’ve listened to about 500 hours of lectures, books,
technical discussions, etc. That is four times
the classroom lectures included in a typical bachelor’s degree. Four
times! And all I had to invest was time spent on long drives (when I
usually get bored anyway) and while exercising (I spend a lot more time
in the gym when I’m listening to something interesting).
With that in mind, you can invest your commute for the Glory of God with your iPod or other inferior MP3 players by dowloading messages from these great resources:
John Piper – http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/
Phil Johnson – http://swordandtrowel.org/
One Place (collection of varying bible teachers) – http://oneplace.com
S. Lewis Johnson – http://www.believers-chapel.org/online.htm
A few comments on S. Lewis Johnson. That link provides a comprehensive list of Dr. Johnson’s messages on OT and NT expositions, Systematic Theology, and Topical messages. There are even some by James M. Boice available all for free! If you really discipline yourself and listen under the teaching of Dr. Johnson you can potentially have the equivalent level of theological instruction some receive at the seminary level.
