Emergent Conversation caught on tape
.. well actually on MP3. Todd Friel of The Way of the Master radio interviewed a prominent leader of the Emergent Church movement. Listen to the MP3 or view the interview transcription.
If you’ve ever wondered terms like post-modern or emergent sound like you’ve got to listen to this interview. It is a very clear picture of how truth, logic, and absolutes are utterly disregarded. Why are simple questions like “is heaven or hell a place” or “will there be judgment of those that don’t believe in Christ” eluded by guys like Doug Pagitt? Why are these types of questions so hard to answer for these guys? Why does it offend them when people speak of propositional statements that are direct quotes from the bible?
If pastors like Doug Pagitt cannot answer simple questions like heaven or hell, judgment, how can they answer greater questions like how does one become saved? Isn’t the very question implying you’re being saved from something? If he’s unclear on what we’re being saved from then wouldn’t it also be true that his message on how to be saved would also be unclear?
This kind of elusive argumentation against clear questions is why the Emergent church is so dangerous. There’s a novel garb they put on but when it comes to actual theological (and inevitable practical) solutions they fall short.
I am aware that this entire post sounds like a harsh condemnation against pastor Doug. It isn’t. I’m sure pastor Doug Pagitt is a great guy. What I am condemning is the thinking, the ideology, the theology (or lack thereof), that not only goes against historic biblical Christianity but against simple reasoning itself.
