Hardcore Atheist concludes “there is a God”
I like how RC Sproul writes. He’s a very lucid writer and has an amazing grasp of church history, apologetics, philosophy, and theology. He has recently done a book review of Antony Flew’s book “There is a God” which was recently posted reformation 21′s website. A hard-core atheist comes to a new conclusion that there is a God. As Sproul puts it:
As a result of his reexamination of the evidence, Antony Flew has come to the conclusion that the universe was created by a self-existent, immutable, immaterial, omnipotent, and omniscient being. He states that he is not yet come full circle to affirming doctrines found in biblical revelation. He has thus far restricted his findings to natural theology. He indicates that he is open to more consideration of biblical revelation. For this reason, he includes in his book an appendix written by Bishop N.T. Wright, in which Wright argues for the historical reality of the incarnation and of the resurrection of Christ. Before the added appendices, Flew ends the body of the work itself with this statement: “Someday I may hear a Voice, that says, ‘Can you hear me now?’”
Here we have an instance where a hardcore atheist has come to the place where he can see what Psalm 19:1-6 says about God’s general revelation or as Sproul calls natural theology.
The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their utterances to the end of the world In them He has placed a tent for the sun, Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber; It rejoices as a strong man to run his course. Its rising is from one end of the heavens, And its circuit to the other end of them; And there is nothing hidden from its heat.
While this is big news in the atheistic community, Flew’s conclusion that there is a god is still short of full biblical revelation. He needs God’s grace to have saving faith in what God has done for us in Christ. God must draw him completely to the place where he goes from verses Psalm 19 1-6 to 7-11.
The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether.
They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; In keeping them there is great reward.
May God be glorified in the salvation of Antony Flew.
