Is it possible to have a favorite author having read them only from one published work? Let me introduce you to Peter Lewis author of The Glory of Christ. This book has been very helpful every time I’ve wanted to get a deeper grasp of the Person and Work of Jesus Christ. This is the only book I own written by the hand of Peter Lewis and I would commend it highly.
In looking at the love of God, Lewis emphasizes that
“God’s love is universal but not indiscriminate.”
He explains that God’s love found in the Old Testament was a jealous love that chooses one among thousands. But the question of God’s love towards people arises. Lewis answers this question forcefully.
This does not mean that God does not love all people. But it does mean that God does not love all people in the same way. This is a problem for some at first, but at a moment’s thought will show us that if love is to be meaningful it will be discriminating and varied. What mother loves the other children in the street ad much as her own? What husband loves all (or any!) other women as much as he loves his wife? The higher a love becomes, the more distinguishing and specific it is.
Dear Christian, marvel again at God’s amazing love for you. How He lavished His love upon you out of the thousands and thousands and made you a child of God!

“What mother loves the other children in the street as much as her own”
That isn’t the right analogy. The question here is “what mother loves all her children equally?”
Hi Deepa -
Thanks for visiting my blog! I think the comparison is God’s love for His children compared to His love for those that are not His children.
Consider the following:
God has a universal love for all people.
God has a special discriminate love for those that are His children.
Not all the people in the world are God’s children.
All people in the world are made in the image of God but to become a child of God, one must place their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
So your analogy of comparing one child to another is not the intention of Peter Lewis. Rather he’s comparing the believer and the unbeliever, and how God’s love applies to both.
Hi Pat,
I remember reading this book a long time ago when I took a Christology class @ GSTM. It’s probably one of the most encouraging books I’ve ever read. I don’t even think it’s in print anymore. I remember when this class was offered again the following year, they had to remove this book from the curriculum because they were unable to purchase them from anywhere.
Anyway, we miss you, Lisa, & the kids. Hope we can come visit again some time.
Hi Ai!
We miss you guys!
Yes this book was the exact one that Frank G assigned to us for Christology and it is very encouraging. He is a true pastor-teacher to present God’s truth and make it so plain.
I know your visits will be few and far between but we still do miss you guys. Also congrats on another turkey in the oven!
