hey Lani,
Good question! I would answer your question by saying, the world is going in the same direction as before. However, when catastrophes like the Asia Tsunami, 9-11, mass deaths, happen etc., its pain is more pronounced.
This world is slowly dying just as the Bible asserts..
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. Romans 8:18-23
The whole world since the beginning has been held subject to corruption including the people in it, you and me. But in the heart of that passage lies the incredible hope of the life after to those who are called children of God. The hope is that though this world is held in subjection to the penalty of sin, which is death and suffering, God gives us a Hope to be a child of His and enjoy a "glory that is to be revealed to us." A day will come that even this earth, "will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God."
There lies our hope Mellani. The life after awaits a paradise for those who are "called children of God." The hope is not so much the world of a paradise, but the hope is in the One, Jesus Christ, who rescues us from this dying world if we place our complete faith in Him as the only one who can save us from this world's penalty of corruption - eternal death. The same writer of Romans, Paul, says:
For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Romans 5:6-10
We shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. This dying world apart from God it says are His "enemies." However, through faith in Jesus Christ, we are reconciled, we are reconciled with God because of Christ's death on the cross for us!
Probably a longer answer than you expected :) Read some of my other posts, especially Our Attention and The 10/40 window.
